Goal 11
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Goal 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. This is crucial for fostering social justice, ensuring adequate housing, and creating the best possible living environments for all individuals. By prioritizing Goal 11, we can work towards building cities that prioritize inclusivity, safety, and sustainability, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for urban populations around the world.
Why does #HousingMatters?
- Because worldwide at least two billion people don’t have access to safe, affordable and adequate housing. By 2030, 3 billion people, about 40 percent of the world’s population will need access to adequate housing.
- Adequate housing has become an emergency. Housing is the first line of defence against climate change and health risks. Homelessness is putting millions of lives at risk.
- Housing can dramatically reduce carbon emissions. Efficient housing design, the use of low-carbon materials, carbon capture, reuse, and zero waste approaches can radically reduce the environmental impacts of the housing sector.
- Housing is more than a roof over our heads. Providing housing is also about providing basic services for people to live in dignity and access to places to thrive.
#HousingMatters on six domains of impact
- Economic Equality – Access to adequate housing can reduce income disparities and drive economic growth in marginalized communities.
- Climate Action – Energy-efficient housing and sustainable designs reduce carbon emissions, mitigating the impact of climate change while reducing the use of resources.
- Social Inclusion – Adequate housing strengthens social cohesion by providing a stable foundation for individuals and families and building resilience to economic and social shocks.
- Gender Equality – Equal access to housing allows women and girls access and control over resources, increasing independence, reducing risks of poverty, violence and exploitation and addressing gender inequalities within society.
- Democratic Governance – Universal housing access supports democratic processes by giving citizens a voice in housing management and production.
- Peace and Security – Addressing housing disparities can contribute to urban safety and reduce conflicts related to land disputes and insecurity of tenure.
Interconnected topics
The goal of housing is profoundly interconnected with various facets of sustainable development, including:
- City Planning, Policies, and Social Justice: Proper housing is closely linked to city planning, adequate policies, and social justice. Access to affordable and adequate housing is essential for fostering social justice and ensuring the well-being of individuals within cities. Adequate policies and legislation play a critical role in promoting inclusive housing and combating corruption in housing-related matters. Damage reparation is also crucial in the context of housing, ensuring that individuals have recourse when their dwellings are impacted by various factors.
- Climate Action and Sustainability: Housing is intricately tied to climate action and sustainability. By implementing measures such as recycling, zero-carbon initiatives, and energy-efficient housing designs, the housing sector can significantly contribute to mitigating the impact of climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Embracing sustainable housing practices is vital for creating resilient and environmentally friendly human settlements.
- Societal Response and Community Development: A comprehensive approach to housing involves encouraging societal response, promoting affordable and adequate housing, and fostering regeneration. Efforts to prevent the prevalence of empty buildings and housing monopolies, as well as addressing evictions without proper notice or alternatives, are integral to creating vibrant and inclusive communities. It is imperative to combat the indifference of authorities and society towards housing issues and empower communities to actively participate in the improvement of housing conditions.
By recognizing the interconnectedness of these areas with the goal of housing, we can collectively brainstorm and implement strategies to build a better planet and society, ensuring that housing is a fundamental component of sustainable and inclusive development. Let’s keep inspiring positive change for a brighter future!
#HousingMatters Art Project
I had an experience with real estate fraud, judicial indolence, and the loss of my home. I have taken action to raise awareness about the issue of housing matters through various forms of art (design, poetry, music, documentary short film) and other media. It’s important to highlight the role of artivism in shaping social memory and conscience, especially in addressing societal issues such as housing rights vs. corruption. We can observe the situation of heirs of big companies in Mexico (as Ramos y Fusther), who are blinded by avarice and selfish monopoly goals, and shielded by government corruption, to run over basic human rights, equity, and governance. Through my testimony and creative endeavor, I am contributing to the dialogue on these critical social and political challenges. You can see part of my work on these links:

Let’s harness the momentum spurred by this call to action to advocate for housing as a fundamental human right, join hands in the #HousingMatters movement, and contribute to the realization of Goal 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Together, let’s work towards inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements, fostering economic equality, climate action, social inclusion, gender equality, democratic governance, peace, and security. Embracing artivism and societal collaboration, let’s stand as champions of housing rights and equitable urban development, striving for a world where every individual has access to dignified and secure housing. In unity, we can inspire transformative progress and make a tangible difference in the lives of communities worldwide.
