Leaders are storytellers, relatives of grandparents who tell us stories and offer guidance. They also become entities of measurement, signs of reference based on what they have built in the social psyche with their public experience. Words and public actions build the steps and image of a protagonist in every field of our societies: communication, arts, science, politics, etc. Sometimes they are quixotic individuals, who seek utopias and transformations, risky, profound renovations of current structures. Some choose to become a model of peace and their career is characterized by motivating and healing others. Some leaders are complex and unpredictable.

There is a deep relationship between ethics and leadership. Leadership without ethics is manipulative and selfish, a little deaf and blind too, somewhat handicapped in its quasi-chattering. If it is shocking, it can achieve great success among the masses, which is why this is often one of the resources of entertainment, pop culture, and even politics. Ethical leadership may not have many followers initially, but the seed it represents is solid as an oak and is of the quality that the humanists who live in the hearts of history – Gandhi, Luther King, Rosa Parks, etc.-. From my point of view, it is wonderful when a leader is somewhat philosophical, mainly ethical, and exerts his influence with the awareness of the repercussions that will arise from the potential of his words.

One of the recognized protagonists regarding the challenges involved in exercising leadership, and the proposals and strategies for efficient leadership, is Collin Powell. One of the most decorated military personnel in the United States, presidential advisor for more than 20 years, director of prestigious multinationals and non-governmental organizations, and North American Secretary of State. He is the example on whom Oren Harari bases his book on the secrets of leadership. About said work, I have made a small list of points that I find useful and efficient:

In every organization, the responsible leader must generate:

  1. Respect.
  2. Performance.
  3. A “noisy” communication system.
  4. Change = Growth = Satisfaction.

Make decisions

  1. Reward the committed and get rid of the poor performers.
  2. Ask uncomfortable questions to find the reality of the situation.
  3. Don’t punish failures, reward initiative.
  4. Keep things simple. (KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid). The simple messages with the best.

Project management

  1. Don’t set a vision unless you are prepared to do it effectively.
  2. Fight only for things vital to the success of the organization.
  3. Be flexible, if things don’t work out the first time be persistent.
  4. Encourage Clarity, Commitment, and Consistency = Credibility.

Staff motivation

The important thing is the people. The organization, the plans, and the theories are not carried out by themselves. Organizations succeed or fail because of people.

Key elements for selecting or promoting people:

  1. Intelligence and judgment.
  2. Ability to anticipate and see around corners.
  3. Loyalty.
  4. Integrity.
  5. Balanced ego.
  6. Dynamism and drive.

Never promote or choose someone who does not share your values in the organization.

A leader is a person with moral, physical, mental and spiritual courage. Courage is a form of goodwill to respectfully and constantly search among everyone for ways to achieve goals and excellent performance for the organization.
