In this article you will find: What is the spleen?: General description, what it controls and energizes, immune functions, hematological functions, spleen conditions, delayed spleen rupture, the spleen in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the spleen in Pranic Healing, Prevention and Recommendations.

Have ever wondered: What is the function of the spleen?

Let me tell you that in the Creative Consciousness workshop, we study Triad No. 7, which relates to the spleen chakra and its relationship with the Tarot cards The Chariot-7 and The Star-17 in order to understand their meaning and how they manifest in creative/artistic works.

In the workshop, we see more clearly how the chakras are ‘organized’ in a geometric system (the Tree of Life) and the meaning of this ‘organization’; that is, how they relate to the other chakras, which ones are central, which correspond to the column of mercy, which to the column of severity, what this position means in the overall scheme of the tree of life, the numerological significance, among other things.

The objective of the workshop is to facilitate the understanding of energies through signs/symbols to apply them in artistic appreciation, so we do not delve into the clinical version of the organs. However, I want to share with you some information about the spleen, based on the teachings of Master Choa Kok Sui, founder of Pranic Healing International, data from Wikipedia, and articles based on ideas from some doctors.

General description of the spleen

The spleen is the organ through which we receive pranic energy from the environment (we also receive significant amounts of prana through the crown -superior prana-, and the soles of the feet -earth prana-. Also through the ‘breathing’ of each chakra, although to a lesser extent.)

The spleen (organ) is controlled and energized by the spleen and throat chakras. The spleen filters and destroys abnormal cells and germs that cause diseases.

All vampirism occurs through the spleen. That is, when in contact with entities of weak energy, they could take one’s energy if one does not know how to protect/shield their own energy.

The spleen is connected with all major chakras, including those in the head. It is located in the middle left rib cage, the posterior chakra, behind the anterior (frontal) spleen chakra. Both have the same function. The spleen chakra has six petals, it is the main entry point of prana from the air or the vitality blobs from the air and plays a vital role in our wellbeing. The spleen chakra attracts white air prana, which is then decomposed into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet pranas that are then distributed to the other major chakras; in other words, the spleen chakra energizes the entirety of the bioplasmic body and the visible physical body. This means that the other major chakras and vital organs are substantially dependent on the spleen chakra for pranic energy. The normal size of the spleen is 1/2 or 2/3 the size of the average of the other major chakras.

The spleen is a parenchymatous organ, flattened and oblong, situated in the upper left area of the abdominal cavity -above the stomach and diaphragm-, in contact with the pancreas, diaphragm, and left kidney. Although its size varies from one person to another, it usually has a length of 5.5′, a width of 10 cm, a thickness of 1.5′, and weighs approximately 0.44 pounds. Its main function is the destruction of old red blood cells, as well as the production and storage of white blood cells (lymphocytes) that will cleanse the blood of bacteria in the spleen and provide important healing tissue and other immune responses throughout our body. It is part of the lymphatic system and is the center of immune activity.

The spleen chakra controls and energizes:

  • The physical spleen
  • Affects the level of pranic energy or the overall vitality of the body
  • Affects the quality of the blood
  • Affects the body’s immune system

Immune functions

  • Humoral and cellular immunity: seventy years ago, a greater predisposition to severe infection was reported after spleen removal, but it wasn’t until 1952 that conclusive evidence began to emerge. Today, it is known that the spleen is extremely important in both humoral and cellular immunity. Antigens are filtered from circulating blood and transported to the organ’s germinal centers, where IgM is synthesized. Additionally, the spleen is fundamental to the production of tuftsin and properdin, which are important in the phagocytosis of encapsulated bacteria.

Hematological functions

  • Hematopoiesis: during gestation, the spleen is characterized as an important producer of red blood cells in the fetus. However, in adults, this function disappears and only reactivates in myeloproliferative disorders that diminish the bone marrow’s capacity to produce an adequate amount.
  • Maturation and destruction of red blood cells (splenic hemocateresis): the spleen molds reticulocytes until they form biconcave discs, as well as eliminates old, abnormal, or damaged red blood cells. When for various reasons the spleen had to be removed, abnormal erythrocytes that would have been destroyed in the presence of the organ appear in peripheral blood; among them, dianocytes and other elements with intracellular inclusions can be found. Although the function of the spleen in humans is not to store erythrocytes, it is a key place for iron deposition and contains a considerable portion of platelets and macrophages available to enter the bloodstream when necessary.

Conditions of the Spleen
Based on clairvoyant observations, the spleen chakra is usually, if not always, affected in patients suffering from severe infections. From a medical point of view, the physical spleen removes abnormal particles, especially germs from the blood and also produces antibodies.

Malfunctioning of the spleen chakra can manifest as:

  • Spleen conditions
  • Low vitality
  • Low immunity level
  • Contaminated blood or blood conditions
  • Arthritis or rheumatism

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have a dirty spleen chakra.
The spleen chakra is closely related to the navel chakra; when the navel chakra is highly energized and partially activated, the spleen chakra is also substantially energized and partially activated, therefore receiving more prana from the air, increasing the pranic energy level of the entire body.

The spleen purifies the blood flowing through it, filtering and destroying abnormal cells and disease-causing germs. By stimulating and strengthening the spleen, the immune and defense system improves; patients suffering from severe infection have a contaminated and sluggish spleen chakra. The physical spleen is also negatively affected, thus it is imperative to treat the spleen chakra in cases of severe infection.

Delayed Rupture of the Spleen

A common phenomenon is that many people after a traffic accident apparently have no significant injuries, but days later present abdominal pain that doctors may diagnose as delayed spleen rupture. How is it possible that nothing is felt at the moment of impact, and yet days later? Many abdominal contusions suffered by occupants of a vehicle, be it a car, truck, bicycle, or motorcycle, end up injuring this organ. And these contusions can occur due to an impact received in the area or from the sudden deceleration occurring in a collision. In fact, the left ribs cause up to 20% of spleen injuries, and many of these injuries occur without any vehicle element hitting the abdomen, but simply from deceleration.

The spleen has a peculiar feature, which is that it is surrounded by a capsule that serves as a wrapper. And it is precisely this capsule that is now considered responsible for the delayed rupture of the spleen. Its rupture and subsequent surgical removal are frequent because it is a very fragile organ, like a sponge that is almost impossible to suture and close, which is why it has to be removed.

After the collision, the spleen begins to bleed slowly but without anything surfacing, as the capsule surrounding the spleen encloses the hemorrhagic content. There comes a time when the capsule can no longer contain the accumulated blood and bursts, spilling its content into the abdominal cavity. This can lead the injured person to hemorrhagic shock and, in the worst cases, to their death. So much so that if we compare the mortality rate from this mechanism with the mortality derived from an immediate spleen rupture, we find a difference of 5-15% against 1%, respectively.

The delay in the manifestation of bleeding symptoms due to capsule rupture can take up to 30 days; there are even cases where it is said to occur after years, but it rarely happens before 48 hours. Therefore, it is not surprising that in accidents involving seemingly healthy occupants, some may be at risk of experiencing a conflict. For all these reasons, it is important to clarify how the collision occurred, in what position the vehicle occupants ended up, and what significant contusions they remember, as these aspects are worth declaring, both at the initial moment and during subsequent medical examinations. In principle, in any collision where any occupant has suffered an abdominal trauma, any sign of immediate or delayed discomfort in the abdomen, be it isolated discomfort or associated with other symptoms, should prompt us to seek medical attention without delay at the nearest emergency center, even if nothing special was observed during the first medical examination.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

The spleen is the earth element in Chinese medicine. When your acupuncturist tells you that you have “spleen Qi deficiency,” you may just look blank and not understand how this explains the ailments you are trying to overcome. As previously described, the theory of Chinese medicine uses the names of the organs to help illustrate a pattern of physical and psychological problems related to it. When an acupuncturist says that you have a “spleen” problem, they are generally talking about the “spleen system” from the Chinese perspective. This system involves the physical spleen, the pancreas, the spleen acupuncture meridian, the imbalances (or structures) related to the spleen, diseases from Western medicine related to the spleen/pancreas, such as diabetes and chronic fatigue, and a range of health issues that arise from spleen-related imbalances from a TCM perspective.

Like all organ systems in Chinese medicine, they are treated in the yin and yang duo or as they are also known as zang (solid, full) and fu (hollow) pairs; the spleen is no exception. While the liver pairs with the gallbladder, the heart with the small intestine, and the kidneys with the urinary bladder, the spleen pairs with the stomach. What is unique about the pairing of the spleen is that functionally the system encompasses the spleen, the pancreas, and the stomach. Compared to other systems in Chinese medicine, you will see that the terms stomach and spleen are used more interchangeably due to the complex relationships between these organs. The “spleen” ultimately refers to the spleen/pancreas system, so understanding both organs is vital to understanding the series of health issues that may be contributing to imbalances in these systems.

Pranic Healing
The pranic energy level of the entire body can be significantly increased by applying pranic healing (cleaning and energizing) to the spleen chakra. This has a strengthening effect on the entire body. Treating the spleen chakra should be done with caution. Especially in children or in hypertensive individuals, it is very delicate and should be conducted by an experienced healer.

The health of the energetic body also depends on the individual’s habits. Generally, the energetic body is refined by being predominantly vegetarian, meditating, and regular healing. It is contaminated by people who resort to smoking, drinking alcohol, or using hallucinogenic drugs; substances that have a contaminating effect and clog the energetic body.

In the case of heavy smokers, the etheric body is contaminated with dirty, brownish energy; many meridians are partially blocked, weakening the physical body as a whole; when the posterior meridian of the spine is partially blocked, several chakras tend to congest and overactivate, making the smoker susceptible to hypertension, in addition to contamination and affliction to certain organs such as the lungs and heart.

In the case of frequent alcohol consumption, the etheric body becomes dirty and dense. Drug addiction also contaminates and damages the etheric body, making the addict a candidate for undesirable external physical influences that can manifest as severe psychological disorders.

In certain places, the earth is contaminated and has dirty, grayish energy emanating from it. If the grounds have been filled with garbage, etc., these areas eventually adversely affect the physical and psychological health of their residents, just as living in a highly polluted city does.

Certain places are etherically dirty, such as hospitals, funeral homes, cemeteries, and others. Relatively weak individuals should take a shower with sea salt (granular salt) to remove etheric dirt or contamination after visiting such places; healthy individuals have bodies capable of expelling that contaminated energy, but it remains advisable to take a shower with sea salt as a preventive measure.

If a room has been used for an extended time by a very sick person, the room is filled with energy that needs to be cleaned. If the room or home has been occupied by a negative or psychologically disturbed person, this place is unsuitable for the physical or psychological well-being of anyone. Relatively sensitive people may experience discomfort in such locations that have been imbued with negativity. Places can be cleaned using salt water, sandalwood incense, prayer, and sunlight.

Objects can also be etherically contaminated; it is better to avoid lending your personal belongings and refrain from using others’ objects. In other words, a physical or psychological ailment can be transmitted through the use of an object (jewelry, clothing, even using the car of a sick driver). The characteristics of the owners become imprinted in the objects they own and can transmit their diseases or negativities. Objects can be cleaned using salt water, sandalwood incense, prayer, and sunlight.

You can also become contaminated by interacting with others; if you treat a sick person, you may feel weakened because the sick person may subconsciously absorb some of your healthy pranic energy, and you may absorb some of their sick energy. When you constantly embrace a sick loved one, you tend to get sick as well. It’s the same as when a very sick person hugs a large tree to absorb the tree’s life force, and the tree receives the sick energy; in time, the tree may die. The decision of whether to hug a sick loved one constantly or not involves considering the potential detriment to your health or the emotional harm it could cause the loved one if you do not embrace them; only you can decide, bearing in mind your love and affection; you can lovingly hug or be hugged. To correct the effects of partial contamination and depletion, take 3000 mg of garlic oil because it contains a lot of orange prana and therefore has a strong cleansing effect. Caution: an overdose can cause diarrhea. To energize the body, take 2000 mg of bee pollen, 2000 mg of Chinese or Korean red ginseng, and 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E.

A healthy practice is to go to the beach regularly; seawater has a cleansing effect on the energetic body. The body is energized with fresh air, sunlight, and the earth.

Negative thoughts and emotions are one of the critical factors, if not the main one, in severe illnesses.

Appropriate emotional and mental hygiene, with positive thoughts and emotions such as happiness, kindness, joy, and enthusiasm tend to have beneficial effects on psychological, etheric, and physical levels. Feeling happy, relaxed, and smiling increases your energy level.
