1. What is International Women’s Day (IWD)?

International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th each year, is a global day dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing a for gender equality, calling attention to the barriers women face and advocating for greater inclusivity and representation within all sectors of society.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975, which had been proclaimed the International Women’s Year. In 1977, the UN General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace. It has since been commemorated annually by the UN and much of the world.

2. Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for Women and Girls

Women and girls worldwide deserve the fundamental rights to live free from discrimination, violence, and inequality. Rights encompass not just basic human rights but also reproductive rights, access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Equality means ensuring that women have the same rights and privileges as men, including in decision-making roles, employment, and education. Empowerment involves equipping women with the tools, resources, and confidence they need to influence their own lives and communities positively. Together, these elements create an environment where women and girls can flourish and contribute to society fully.

3. Imagining a Gender Equal World

To envision a gender-equal world, we must collectively aspire to a society where every individual has equal opportunities and rights, regardless of gender. This future can be realized through education, policy changes, and active engagement in discussions around gender issues. Each of us has a role to play—whether it’s challenging stereotypes, supporting women’s leadership, or advocating for gender-responsive policies.

4. Actions for Everyday Life to Improve Women’s Inclusion

Individuals can take several practical steps to empower women in their everyday lives, including:

  • Supporting Women-Owned Businesses: Choose to buy from and promote businesses founded or owned by women.
  • Advocating for Equal Pay: Engage in conversations around fair wages and support policies that promote pay equity.
  • Mentoring: Offer guidance and support to women and girls seeking to advance in their careers or education.
  • Educating Others: Share knowledge about gender equality issues with friends, family, and colleagues to raise awareness.

5. International Legal Actions related to International Women’s Day

Numerous international frameworks and agreements, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Sustainable Development Goals (especially Goal 5), underscore the global commitment to gender equality. International Women’s Day acts as a platform for reinforcing these treaties and fostering accountability among nations to adhere to their obligations regarding women’s rights.

This legal development wouldn’t have been possible without he labor of numerous women and their social work, as: Mary Ellen Richmond. Grace Longwell Coyle. Insoo Kim Berg. Shirley Chisholm. Wilma Mankiller. W. Gertrude Brown. Irena Sendler.

These and more remarkable women made significant contributions to social work, advocating for social justice and uplifting vulnerable communities worldwide.

6. IWD and Art Manifestations and Activism

International Women’s Day is not only a platform for political discourse but also a vibrant space for artistic expression and activism. Artists and activists alike utilize various art forms—such as music, theatre, visual arts, and digital media—to convey messages of empowerment and equality. These creative expressions help raise awareness, ignite conversations, and inspire action towards gender equality, ultimately making the ideals of IWD resonate.
