The global food supply faces immense challenges that stem from a variety of factors including agricultural practices, population growth, economic disparities, and climate change. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), around 1.5 billion tonnes of food are produced globally each year. However, food production must increase to meet the needs of a world population projected to reach approximately 9.7 billion by 2050, which requires an increase of about 70% in global food production.

The Capacity to End World Hunger

Although sufficient food is produced globally, over 820 million people remain hungry, highlighting the significant problem of food distribution and accessibility rather than production alone. While the agriculture sector has the capacity to end world hunger by improving food distribution systems, addressing inequalities, and reducing food waste, challenges like poverty, armed conflict, and unemployment continue to hinder progress. Furthermore, concerns about food safety also impact the potential to improve hunger levels globally.

Safety of Food Supply

The safety of our food supply is a pressing concern. Several factors can compromise food safety, leading to incidents of foodborne illnesses. For instance, the bacteria E. coli O157:H7, often found in undercooked meat and contaminated vegetables, can cause severe illness or even death. Legally, meat or vegetables contaminated with this bacterium must be removed from the market, yet lapses in food safety protocols can still lead to outbreaks.

Contaminated water is another significant concern that poses risks not only to crop irrigation but also to the health of consumers who rely on it for drinking and cooking. Chemical contaminants in processed foods are also prevalent; the additives and preservatives used can pose health risks, leading to long-term health issues in consumers.

The Netflix documentary “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food” dives deep into the alarming realities of foodborne illnesses and the contaminants that infiltrate our daily diets. With the CDC reporting that 1 in 6 Americans will experience food poisoning annually and the United States facing approximately 36 foodborne pathogen outbreaks each week, this film sheds light on critical issues affecting public health. Adapted from Jeff Benedict’s compelling book, “Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat,” the documentary recounts the 1993 E. coli outbreak linked to Jack In The Box hamburgers, which tragically claimed the lives of four children and left over 700 others ill. “Poisoned” serves as an eye-opening exploration of the food industry’s safety protocols and the urgent need for heightened awareness—often the first step towards meaningful action to safeguard our health.

To mitigate the risks associated with food poisoning and promote healthy eating, several recommendations can be adopted:

What Not to Buy

  • Avoid purchasing foods with ambiguous ingredient lists or those that contain harmful additives, such as trans fats and artificial colors.
  • Stay away from perishable items with damaged packaging, as this could indicate contamination.

Cooking Meat

  • Ensure that meat is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C) to effectively kill any harmful bacteria. A reliable meat thermometer can assist in accurately checking temperatures.

Disinfecting Vegetables

  • It is essential to wash vegetables thoroughly under running water. Using a brush for firm vegetables can help remove dirt and bacteria. Soaking vegetables in a vinegar solution can also provide an additional layer of protection against contaminants.

Several artists and activists have highlighted the pressing issues related to food safety and global food challenges. For instance, activist and artist Jae Rhim Lee created the “Infinity Burial Project,” which critiques food systems and promotes awareness of environmental impacts. Meanwhile, Swiss artist Sabina Speich, through her works, addresses issues of food waste, junk food and the consumption patterns of a growing global population with her Crochet Giantfood projects, encouraging a discourse around the societal impacts of our food choices.
