World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, the approximate date on which the world’s population reached five billion people. World Population Day aims to increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights.

History of World Population Day

The World Population Day was established in 1989 by the then Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme to address the urgency and importance of population issues created due to outgrowing population. In 1987, the world population had reached 500 crores. This figure triggered the idea of having a dedicated day to promote awareness of population issues, including their ties to the environment and development.

After the establishment of world population day in 1990, the United Nations decided to continue this event and the first event was witnessed on the 11th of July 1990 in 90 countries.

The day was suggested by Dr. K.C.Zachariah when population reached five billion while he worked as Sr Demographer at World Bank. Press interest and general awareness in the global population surges at the increments of whole billions of people, the world population increases by 100 million approximately every 14 months. The world population hit 7,700,000,000 in 2019, and 8 Billion Global population on November 15, 2022.

World Population Day – Importance and Significance

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Although the global population growth rate will continue to decline in the coming decades, the world’s population will likely to be in between 20-30% greater in 2050 than in 2020.

It is undeniable that the growing world population is becoming a threat to human survival. In 2017, the world population was around 700 crores; and in 2024, it was reported as 810 crores. Because of overpopulation, the world’s natural resources are depleting daily at an unsustainable rate.

Health science and technology advancements have reduced mother and child mortality and increased life span. However, it is evident that overgrowing population is a challenge when faced with climate change and the violence experienced by too many people still based on their gender, ethnicity, class, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and origin.

So, to curb the threat to a healthy society and provide a better and sustainable future for the upcoming generation, it is essential to create awareness and educate people about the risk associated with overpopulation.
