Whether you are an anime fan, or a parent interested in choosing educational entertainment for your little ones, Dr. Stone is a work with great potential. This anime motivates audiences to approach knowledge, not only as a useful tool in everyday life, but even as something transcendent. Currently we see the growing interest and popularization of science in the youth field. Normally we take things like electricity, soda, baking soda, medicine for granted, but we would see these benefits of today as amazing if we had to remake the world.

Part of the magic and popularity of the play is that the protagonists experience the challenges with a sense of humor, an epic accent, somewhat folk, but generally lighthearted. The story begins at an end of the world in which all human beings turn to stone. Dr. Stone; Senku Ishigami, is a young man of high intelligence, whose name means something like “stone god of a thousand heavens.” Waking up in a jungle world, surrounded only by statues that were once human, he promises himself to find a way to reverse petrification in as many people as possible to rebuild civilization through the application of science. In this post-apocalyptic context, Doc. Is the hope for survival through community building: He, Taiju, and their friends begin a charismatic journey through knowledge to re-develop civilization.

-“I will use science to rebuild civilization from scratch. I will use the power of science to save all humans.” Dr Stone

The Energy of a body at rest is equal to its mass multiplied by the speed of light squared. Albert Einstein

Could it be that this fantasy tells us about something that can happen or that potentially already happened before? If you believe that Atlantis existed, -a great civilization that was destroyed and forced the civilization to a reset-, then we would be in a Déjà vu or a second, third or fourth act of the creation of culture. And what if there were also lands like Mu, Lemuria or Hyperboria? If this were to happen again, surely having a person who has memorized the wisdom of technology and science would be incredibly helpful.

The universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old, planet Earth 4.5 billion years old, and humanity 6 million years old, of which only the last 300 years are the stage of industrial civilization. Senku Ishigami, if he were with us in 2020, would be a person comfortable with the current times. His desire to be an astronaut would most likely make him part of the SpaceX team, founded by Elon Musk, and the current plans to explore the galaxy. Or perhaps, in the parallel world where a Dr. Stone is on planet Earth in the second millennium, there is also Nikola Tesla and they are collaborating in a renaissance of science.

Production

Riichiro Inagaki began working on Dr. Stone with the initial idea of creating a protagonist who was considered a relatively normal character unlike many others within the genre. He decided that his best approach with the creation of Senku was to create a character who was ambitious and decided to actively push themselves through hard work to meet their goals. He also wanted to create a character who closely resembled the character Agon Kongo from his own manga serialization Eyeshield 21 in terms of personality and characteristics and felt that it was appropriate for the chosen setting. Inagaki was personally fascinated by the subject of science as a child and sought to create a science-based story for entertainment purposes that also told common themes and messages that would be compelling to audiences. As for influences, Inagaki stated that Video Girl Ai was a series that had a significant impact on the development of the story.

Inagaki works remotely with his illustrator Boichi, in which the former sends his own created storyboards to the latter through his own editor. By the time the pair began working on the series, Inagaki was already quite familiar with Boichi’s work as an artist and initially had a hard time getting his ideas across for his collaborator to illustrate, often not knowing how to draw some of Senku’s inventions and how to make them feel impressive. While developing the setting for the series, Boichi became enthralled with imagining how to create the look of a futuristic Japan set 3,700 years after humanity was turned to stone. He settled on the idea of creating a vast, beautiful world where Japan’s nature was left untouched due to the loss of humanity’s influence. When asked about scientific details, Inagaki revealed that both he and Boichi have conducted research on the topic during the development of the series, while also receiving help from a consultant.

Adaptation
Director Shinya Iino expressed that one of the challenges with adapting the series to animation was determining how the backgrounds would appear in a different medium. He would claim that Boichi had provided assistance by sending his own sketches as a way to make the adaptation process easier. Lino would also claim that the theme of science featured in the manga captured his attention in the series, as it was not a theme that appeared in many other shōnen series.
